Snow is here and house is cold - the boiler is just about keeping up so thought that I needed to make the house more efficient.
Got this collection of tips reading the web.
Check where you are using the heating boiler :
If you have a spare bedchamber that is not being used turn off the central heating radiator in the room. Why heat rooms which are not going to be used, this only increases your gas consumption. If you keep the entrance door closed to the room it will prevent the flow of cold air around your home.
Prefer the gas boiler in preference to using a fire :
A
gas heating boiler is much more cost-efficient than using a fire to heat one room. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, modern central heating systems are much more efficient in heating your home than using an electric fire.
Draft proof where you have draughts
As chilly draughts blow into your home money passes out in the opposite direction. DIY stores stock many insulation materials for use for this. Use a foam based sealant to close off any gaps between your door frame and the window frames where these meet the exterior wall. These type of cracks happen often in elderly homes as the foundations settle. If you are careful and use a wax candle flame you can detect where drafts are in a room.
Seems obvious really.
